By 1959 Auckland University is well-known and prestigious, but the buildings have become run down. To make matters worse, student numbers are rising rapidly. First-year science laboratories are housed in a series of huts set on the tennis courts.

In 1964 the University of Waikato opens at its Hillcrest location. Small and new, it lacks a reputation, but it showcases increasing numbers of modern, futuristic concrete buildings with modern teaching technology.

Imagine you have just finished secondary school in the early 1960s. Would you enrol for tertiary study at the modest but modern, University of Waikato?
